The League for Animals and People of the Summit – L.A.P.S. – has been supporting Summit County, Colorado people and their pets since 1991.
L.A.P.S. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit which raises funds to support a variety of programs for the pets of low income families living or working in the Summit County area. Included in their services are: the "Chappy Fund" for abused pets; the "Cheyenne Fund" for pets with life-shortening illnesses; adopted pet spay/neuter assistance fund; discounts on spay/neuter for your pet; low income medical assistance for pets; and low income general assistance for pets.
As well as receiving funds for L.A.P.S from memberships, grants and donations from generous individuals and businesses, L.A.P.S also holds special event fundraisers throughout the year. In winter, their DogTerra event includes ski jor clinics and practice, snowshoeing, Dogstacle course, frisbee/chuck-it throws, free coffee, cocoa and donuts and PRIZES but NO TIMED EVENTS ... it’s all just for FUN! For example, at Christmas, L.A.P.S. holds their annual pictures with Santa event and in the summer they have their K9 4K event.
The K9 4K will be held this year on Saturday, August 2nd in Frisco, Colorado. This is a really fun event with the race starting at 9:15AM (arrive a bit earlier for registration!). More info from Sally, the L.A.P.S. board president:
L.A.P.S. has a mission that would have to appeal to anyone with a heart: “to prevent pet overpopulation and the needless euthanasia of helpless animals” by offering $40 vouchers for spay/neuter to anyone living or working in Summit County, regardless of their income, and free to the local lower income families. L.A.P.S. also provides financial aid to lower income families for high vet bills like ACL surgeries or cancer. Last year, they gave just under $50,000 back to our community and expect 2008 to be even better with the help of our benefactors.
This great non-profit is run completely by volunteers. There are no paid staff, no office space rented, no computers, printers or phones, other than what’s in the homes of our Board members, who spend a lot of their free time making L.A.P.S. a vital presence in our community. The League for Animals & People of the Summit is the only local animal non-profit that gives 100% of all donations back to our own community. Money is raised through grants, membership fees, donations from caring individuals and businesses and our various fundraisers.
Saturday, August 2 brings our biggest fundraiser: the 18th Annual Canine 4K , Feline No-Way , sponsored by the Town of Frisco, which loops around Frisco with 150 dogs of all sizes and breeds dragging their owners who can either walk or run. Each paid entrant receives a custom 4K t-shirt and doggie goodie bag (some cat goodie bags on a first come basis), and is eligible for the door prizes, doggie contests like Pet/Owner Look-alike, Best Singer and Best Dancer and more. Prizes are given to top finishers in age/gender/walk/run categories so half the participants go home with something. Over $14,600 was raised last year at the 4K to benefit needy animals in Summit County.
This year, in order to include all our loyal members who own cats, we are expanding & renaming our 4K and asking people to come walk or run with us even though they won't be accompanied by a dog. It's all in good fun and to help raise more money, since last year L.A.P.S. got hit hard with triple the number of financial requests and the cost of vet care. So now, you can sleep in or walk your conspiciously missing cat and help us help the needy pets in Summit County. Non-dog entrants will not be timed, but are eligible to win some prizes too. Also new, is the Team Pledge category, where a single person or a whole team can collect pledge money and a grand prize will go to the "team" who brings in the most money for L.A.P.S.
You can join L.A.P.S. that morning and receive the member rate. A maximum of 2 dogs per entrant and dogs must have a 6 foot leash and proof of current rabies vaccination. Registration forms can be picked up at the Summit County Animal Shelter or any of the pet stores and vet offices in the county.
A Silent Auction will run all morning and you need not be present to win the 7 day timeshare in Mexico, 2 RT airline tickets, a Lit photo session or one of many gift certificates (cash & check only - no credit cards - for the auction and the race).
There will be some entertainment, during the wait for the race results, with a troupe of Dancing Dogs from Golden, CO or you can cool off in our misting tent or splash around with Fido in the doggie swimming pools. Free Abbey's gourmet coffee, bagels & donuts will be served before the race.
We hope you can join us!
