Colorado’s Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Resources for Dogs and Cats

February is Spay/Neuter Month
By Rita Sharma, Best Friends Network Volunteer
Let’s keep spreading the message to help everyone understand that spaying and neutering all of our cats and dogs is a key step in addressing pet overpopulation. Progress is being made, but there still are so many pet owners, often misinformed, who still have not spayed or neutered their animals.
While some would say that they simply cannot afford the procedure financially, there are many shelters, rescues, and clinics statewide that offer low or no cost spay / neuter options. Some offer weekly or monthly clinics while others operate almost daily to provide these services. Of course, most shelters and rescues will only adopt out animals that have already undergone the procedure, so by adopting from them, owners don’t need to take that extra step. (It’s yet another reason to adopt, rather than buy!)
Spaying and neutering is so important, especially to our already-full shelters and rescues, that several of them will perform the procedure at no cost rather than turn an animal away, intact.
To make it easy to help spread the word, here are a few of the resources available throughout Colorado that offer low-cost spay and neuter procedures. It’s a measure of prevention that we can’t afford not to take.

A wealth of resources are available through Spay/USA and they can also help identify local veterinarians in the area. They are working on increasing the Colorado participants, which is more encouraging news.
If you have friends or neighbors who have not yet spayed or neutered their pets, perhaps you can supply this information for them. It might be just the inspiration they need to take this critical step!
