Best Friends has resources for every step of the way.
By Rita Sharma, Best Friends Network VolunteerThere is always a need for more safe havens for animals, and Best Friends offers a variety of resources to help you in this endeavor. While having acreage and a brick-and-mortar facility may seem to be the ideal setting, they’re not necessary. Many creative approaches abound, including having ‘virtual’ sanctuaries with the help of foster homes and a strong community presence. Hands-on learning by volunteering at a local sanctuary would surely prove invaluable, and often sanctuary directors are more than happy to share their story including how start-up trials, tribulations and triumphs.
We have an abundant and ever-growing supply of resources on practically every aspect of starting your own sanctuary or rescue organization. These resources are available anytime to inspire, offer direction, and bring your dream to reality!
Getting StartedA series of articles focused on starting a sanctuary are found at the
Best Friends Resources page.
One of particular relevance is a comprehensive article by Faith Maloney entitled
“How to Start an Animal Sanctuary”.
For an deep, comprehensive experience, related workshops are held at the Best Friends Sanctuary in Kanab regularly, with the next one coming up March 16 through 22. Click
here for more details.
Setting Up Your Non-Profit StatusAlso essential to the creation of an animal sanctuary is the full understanding of specific tax laws and the details behind creating a non-profit organization. We have many Colorado-based resources for individuals and organizations.
