Meet Emily, from puppymill breeder to Princess of the couch!

Meet Emily, a pretty white and fawn girl who loves every day of her new life. Emily was rescued from a puppy mill outside of Baton Rouge, LA in August 2008. She lived all her years (she was likely 3-4 at the time) in a small cage where she did everything, in filthy and unsanitary conditions, with no medical attention and was exposed to the elements. Rescuers told us some of the dogs they found in the cages were already deceased and just left there. Emily was infested with all types of worms, including heartworms. She was also pregnant at the time and had puppies less than a week after being rescued.

Emily was a lucky one, she has received medical treatment and she is now adopted into our loving home with her adoptive sister, Blaze (who says she happily made space on the couch for a Co-Princess!).Emily now has the chance to live life as any pet should.

This woman was able to operate for so many years because people would buy puppies from her off the internet. The more people hear these stories, hopefully they will think twice about a high priced pet store or internet purchase!

There has been information about puppy mills suppling pet stores since the 70's. My parents taught me that pet stores were gross and not to shop there. If you wanted a pet you go to a shelter, rescue a stray, or buy one from a real AKC breeder. I'm shocked about how few people seem to know that these days!

Society seems very disconnected lately. We seem to think our beef and milk come from loving family farms instead of the gigantic cut-throat agri-business that it does. We seem to think that it is ok to buy a puppy for out kids not realizing the major medical costs from the poor breeding.

I learned from an early age to never buy anything from a store that sold puppies. It was just something that we grew up with in our family. Every dog we ever had was a rescue. We were also taught to tell everyone we knew to not buy from stores that sold puppies, as no reputable breeder would ever sell their dogs to a pet store.

I was taught by my parents that buying puppies from a pet store was wrong. We adopted our family dog from a shelter when I was 5-years-old after my parents had a bad experience with a Beagle they had purchased for my older brothers from a pet store. The Beagle, Lassie, was sick and had many behavioral problems that they were unable to resolve. They kept her, regardless of these behaviors b/c they feared if she were to be brought to a shelter, no one would have wanted her and she would have been euthanized.

I didn't know what a puppy mill was until much later. Although I can't remember the exact piece of literature or video that first showed me the horrors of a puppy mill, I know it was sometime around 2005, when I decided to become a vegetarian (I am now vegan) and took a closer look at how we treat all animals in this world.

Volunteering at the ASPCA shelter in NYC and as the New York Network Team Leader for Best Friends has shown me first hands the victims of these horrible institutions and I pass on the message of adoption over pet stores to anyone who will listen.

How and why did you become involved with Best Friends? – We were visiting the southern Utah area a couple of years ago and heard about it from the owners of a B&B – we decided to go and visit and did the tour – I was so taken by their commitment to these animals and their mission _ I became a member and went back August 2009 to volunteer.

What is it about Best Friends that motivates you to enact social change for animals? – I have always been an animal lover and advocate to educate others about the welfare of animals – realizing every little bit helps – however it is powerful to see what Best Friends is able to do especially now with the success of their NGC Show _ Dog Town – they have been able to make it accessible for others to make, feel, and see a difference through their contributions and efforts.

How would you describe Best Friends Animal Society to someone who had never heard of the organization before? – Best Friends is a non-profit, tax-exempt – no kill sanctuary (largest in the US) –their focus is on homeless animals; providing adoption, spay/neuter, and educational programs - including an interactive- online global community. For those that may be familiar with the show “Dog Town” I let them know that what they see on TV is just a small part of what this organization does and what they are about- it’s bigger than just the sanctuary in Utah.

What is the social impact and importance of Best Friends Animal Society and Sanctuary, in your opinion? - Best Friends is working with shelters, rescue groups and our members nationwide to bring about a time when there will be no more homeless pets- while this is a huge task to undertake - they have had a significant impact on educating and driving change – there have been a significant reduction in the number of animals euthanized in shelters over the last two decades.

What would be “success” for Best Friends? – as mentioned above their goal is to have no more homeless pets – is it possible ? – well this all started as a grassroots network of people and organization that care about animals – I believe with the continued education and the continued enforcement for animal cruelty there could be additional success in accomplishing their greater goal “A better world through kindness to animals..”

What do you think are the biggest obstacles that Best Friends Animal Society faces? Are the obstacles avoidable or surmountable, in your opinion? It’s difficult as there are many cultural challenges with this goal and financial challenges which I know many shelters are facing – but I believe that Best Friends is trying to target the challenge in an effective way – especially with their campaigns (First Home Forever Home, Focus on Felines, Puppies Aren’t Products, and Pit Bulls: Saving America’s Dog) – these are all campaigns focusing on the root cause vs. just putting a band aid on the issue.

How and why did you become involved with Best Friends? What is it about Best Friends that motivates you to enact social change for animals?

I had heard of them years ago on Oprah (I think). I took a trip out west with my family last spring and we visited the sanctuary on our way to Zion National Park. Best Friends has a large enough "public face" that they are in a unique position to mobilize individuals all over the world.

How would you describe Best Friends Animal Society to someone who had never heard of the organization before?

It is a large, open animal sanctuary meant primarily for seriously ill or poorly socialized animals who would likely be euthanized in other shelters. They provide health care and training to make as many animals adoptable as possible, and provide a home for unadoptable animals for life.

What is the social impact and importance of Best Friends Animal Society and Sanctuary, in your opinion?

They are large enough to have national and global impact on issues such as puppy mills and are able to educate the public regarding spay, neuter, etc.

What would be “success” for Best Friends?

They state that their main objective is "No More Homeless Pets". It's a noble goal, but there are always going to be irresponsible people in the world who don't care about animal welfare or abuse animals.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles that Best Friends Animal Society faces? Are the obstacles avoidable or surmountable, in your opinion?

Biggest obstacle, again, are irresponsible people. They can continue to educate, but I'm afraid the problem is never going to be fully solved.

My jaw hit the floor when I saw this site while searching for some other information on dogs. This goes against everything I believe it when it comes to adopting animals. Over 50,000 puppies for sale, shipped world wide! I saw a listing for a 3 year old Akita for $1,800. How many homeless animals could be helped with that money?

While I am sure there are some reputable, responsible breeders represented on here, I have to wonder how many thousands of puppy mill dogs are included? SAD, SAD, SAD!

Puppy Mill Awareness Day in Austin, TX

Our regulars came out again last Saturday for our weekly peaceful protest of the Austin, Texas Petland. We've been doing this since the store opened in March 2008, but last week was special since it was Puppy Mill Awareness Day.

The public is welcome to join us every Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the Southpark Meadows shopping center, on the IH 35 frontage road, in front of Chili's. We've got extra signs and now that the weather has cooled, it's much more pleasant.

So please spend a few hours to make your voice heard. We'd love to have you.
