Puppy Mill Legislation Update!

Two great victories were seen this week in the fight for establishing legal regulation of large-scale breeding operations in the state of Wisconsin.

On Tuesday, October 27th, Bill AB250 went in front of the State Assembly and passed unanimously with a vote of 96-0, without any further amendments.

The following day, Wednesday, October 28th, the bill went on to the Joint Finance Committee.  With 15 of the 16 committee members in attendance, the bill was again unanimously passed, with their suggestion that “passage as amended [is] recommended.”

Next, the legislation will head to State Senate as Senate Bill SB208 on Thursday, November 5th.  Before that date, please contact your State Senator and remind him/her of the importance of this legislation.  If made into law, this bill would create a self-funding system to regulate breeders selling 25 or more dogs per year.  Breeders would have to obtain licenses, they would be subject to inspection, and definitive standards of care for animals would be established.  The state would finally have full authority to shut down puppy mills.
