The FIV Gang

Nov 28: They are no different from any of the other cats here at the Best Friends rescue center outside Tylertown, Mississippi. But it’s harder for them to find foster homes until their person can be found or until they can be adopted. They are the FIV gang and all of them are robust and healthy. FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. I asked ..

Passing the message

Nov 28: “If you ignore her, she will ignore you.” “Fairly low key, maybe cage aggressive.” “Not feeling well and moody.” These are just some of the remarks on the dog enclosures at the Best Friends rescue center outside Tylertown, Mississippi. It makes it easier for those coming in to work with the dogs to know their likes and dislikes. Other remarks ..

Coming out of their shell

Nov 28: Yes, we have yard dogs here at the Best Friends rescue center outside Tylertown, Mississippi. And no, not the kind stuck in a back yard receiving little human attention. They spend their time in the center of the rescue center, right where everybody goes back and forth all day and evening. And just about everyone takes the time to pat them, ..

A well-oiled machine

Nov 28: They come in early in the morning and leave late at night. They spend the whole day (well, they do take lunch and dinner breaks!) cleaning cat cages, giving the cats food and fresh water and keeping those litter boxes clean. They also spend time playing with the cats. Kitty City is one of the areas at the Best Friends rescue center outside Tylertown ..

Week one in Tylertown

Nov 28: I have been here one week now at the Best Friends rescue center outside Tylertown, Mississippi. The days blend into each other and you get so caught up in working with the dogs and cats that you almost forget about everything else. Television? Haven’t missed it. Newspapers? Missy and her nine kittens

Nov 28: Missy’s been a busy girl, nine kittens from two litters within months of each other. Missy (a dainty Calico) and her kittens lived in Shreveport and were turned in to Best Friends by a family who could not keep them. It’s been a long road from Shreveport to the Best Friends rescue center outside Tylertown, Mississippi. Missy and her nine kittens ..

Pooch Alley

Nov 25: It’s hard work, both physically and emotionally for some recent Pooch Alley volunteers. Nov 25: Bill and Kim Jones from Bath, Ohio have had a lifetime of experiences. Bill is a professional diver who has traveled all over the world to places like Egypt and Peru. Kim worked as a television show producer in Cleveland and Philadelphia. They bought a mobile home to share with their dogs, Jackie, a Poodle/Shitzu mix, and PJ, a Yorkie. The plan ..

The animal experience

Nov 23: Day three for me at the Best Friends rescue center outside Tylertown, Mississippi. I know the layout now. I am doing a lot of walking to areas like Pooch Alley, the Cat Barn and Toytown, where the smaller dogs are located. The overwhelming impression is seeing all these animals. Trying to remember what the over 600 animals all look like is impossible ..
