Network comes through for rescued baby duck
by Barbara J. Koll, Best Friends Network VolunteerI am continually amazed at the efficiency and effectiveness of the Best Friends Network. A member can post something on a Forum requesting assistance on a specific matter and get help from numerous resources – often in an amazingly short period of time.
On April 13, I noticed a posting on one of the Georgia Forums entitled
“Help!!! Baby Duck!!” It was written by Jen, a librarian at a public library in a metro Atlanta county. Two children had just come into her library and given her a baby duck that they had found. Jen had loads of experience with taking care of newborn kittens but none with birds. She attempted to find the duckling’s mother but was unsuccessful. Jen left a phone message for a local wildlife rehabilitator but at the time she posted the message on the Forum had not hear back from them. She was frantically searching for guidance on how to care for the duckling until she could get it into the hands of professionals.
Within 24 hours the duckling was placed with a nearby licensed wildlife rehab facility. Several Best Friends Staff Members worked with Jen to find an appropriate organization to take him in and care for him. In one of her Forum postings she said this about the Best Friends’ Staff – “It was awesome the amount of help I received from them!! Now I really know what my donations to Best Friends are doing and it’s a WONDERFUL feeling!!”
So – the lesson learned here is – don’t underestimate the power of the Best Friends Network. Miracles happen here.
