Puppy Mill Survivors Still Wait for Homes

Just two dogs out of 170 need homes

Anyone who was ever the last kid picked for kickball can understand what it must feel like to be Hope or Dee Dee. They are the last two dogs (out of over 170) who haven’t yet found homes. The two were living in an awful breeder/hoarder situation in Nebraska until they were rescued by Nebraska Humane Society in May. Click here to read about the rescue.

Pictured right: Hope, just after rescue. “They are two of the very saddest cases,” said Judy Varner, CEO of NHS. Both were terrified, and their little bodies were worn out from over-breeding. They were terrified at all the new experiences, like human contact and regular cleaning and interaction with people. But after months of love, both have flourished in their foster homes. Denise Gurss, adoption coordinator at NHS said, “They are becoming real dogs at this point; they are playing and interacting with other dogs, and they have learned to run around the yard and chase bugs.” Now all they need is to find their forever homes.

To inquire about adopting Hope or Dee Dee, call (402)444-7800 Ext. 272 or 219, or fill out an application online.

Hope
When Hope first came to the Nebraska Humane Society she was very depressed. In the early days in the kennel she did not move or eat. Her personality started to bloom when she moved into her new digs, the office of the executive director. During that short time she started to eat and act like a dog.

She has been in foster care with Happy the Westie. After coming home with her foster parents, Hope discovered she was a terrier and began to bark. She loves to take treats from people, but is still shy. Housetraining will take some additional work, but she is using potty pads to eliminate. One of her favorite activities is running through the backyard at her foster home. Grass is a new feeling she has found exhilarating.

DeeDee
Hello and nice to meet you! My name is Dee Dee (AKA Downstairs Dog to my foster family). These nice people think that I am a West Highland Terrier/ American Eskimo mix. I was Mommy to three beautiful puppies and now it is time for me to retire to a new home. My foster mom knows lots about me.

DeeDee is shy but curious and loves to go for walks and search for rabbits. She keeps the room she is confined to clean throughout the day and potties during her twice-daily walks. Once she knows a person, she will attach to that person easily and loves to have attention and to be petted. She knows how to go up and down steps and gets along with other dogs.

Nebraska Humane has more wonderful pets that need a little extra love. Click here to read more about them.

Cheyenne and other readers - boy can I relate. Please go to my BF blog & read re: our case in PA, in nearby Schuylkill County, re: a horrendous animal abuse/hoarder named Virginia Kresge Justiniano and her 'business' "Cats With No Name" [she hoarded and let dogs die onsite along with the cats - this was absolutely corroborated by witnesses]. This institutional-hoarder/scam-artist had been enabled for ages by area animal "protection" agencies which found her isolated "sanctuary" [hell-hole] a convenient way to 'dispose' [sic] of longterm/nonadopted animals - and obviously make it look like they'd achieved placements/adoptions for the poor innocent animals who then were denied proper food, water, shelter and crucial vaccinations - leading to calicivirus and induced anorexia and starvation! WE HAVE THE PHOTOS - they are too graphic for BF to show; you can see related pix on the blog re: animals hidden away. If you care about animals - and I know you do - you will share my blog/info far & wide and make sure to keep innocent animals and their humans far away from this "FLOCK look-alike"!!! Virginia is every bit as bad as Sheri Allen/FLOCK and based upon witnesses' info Virginia/CWNN has caused the agonizing deaths of even more animals than has Sheri Allen and her FLOCK cronies & groupies in Pahrump, NV. Please share our information!!Here is the link to my blog:

I feel the same way you do, Cheyenne, about all the dogs that will never be saved.
Since the Amish seem to "live above the law", how are they going to be shut down??

While it gives me hope whenever I see a sad, abused little one like Dee Dee or Hope transformed into a happy, healthy dog, I am reminded of the thousands just like them who are still existing in cages, waiting to be saved, who will never know the happiness that Dee Dee and Hope are now experiencing........and I cry. No dog deserves to be treated so cruelly. I am from the Lancaster-Chester County, PA area and thanks to the Amish, we have some of the worst mills in the country here in PA. The Amish manage to live above the law, and while touting themselves to be good Christians, the so called "gentle people", in reality they are the most cruel of the millers, totally unconcerned with the horrible suffering they are inflicting on God's creatures.

I live in Maine and the state seized 239 dogs from a mill in August. We are still caring for the dogs, but thankfully the State has been granted ownership and we are able to start adopting them out. Since taking possession, another 50 or 60 have been born and fostered. Now that we are getting this round of dogs healthy and adopted, we've had a surrender of 20 mill dogs and the state is trying to get the breeder (I use that term loosely) to surrender the rest to us as well. I'm glad these dogs are being confiscated/surrendered but it really opens my eyes to the issues we have right here at home. To many of us, it was something that happened elsewhere, not in our back yards.

Anyone want to volunteer to scoop poop with me on the weekends?

It almost hurts they are both so adorable....prayers out for you both to find the perfect homes very soon. Those statistics are unreal, though, only two left out of 170! There are some great adopters out there!

That first picture just broke my heart. Her current picture is wonderful! What a difference a little love and attention will do for these neglected sweeties. I hope they both find their fabulous forever homes soon.

I'm so glad that there WAS hope for Hope. Her follow-up photo shows what love and care can do for even those who have just about given up.

And DeeDee? Well, have you ever seen such a bright-eyed cutie? She looks like she could jump right through the screen and settle in your lap.

Hope both of you darlings are home in time for the holidays!

Great work, Nebraska Humane and Best Friends!
