However, your advocacy is needed to help save the victimized canines

By Ed Fritz, Best Friends staff

Ed Faron of Wildside Kennels was arrested and charged with felony dog fighting and baiting back in December 2008. Since then, more than 127 dogs have been held, including multiple litters of puppies who have been born since the seizure.

However, last Thursday the dogs became the custody of the Wilkes County Animal Shelter. According to reports in the Journal Now, county officials have said that regardless of Faron’s guilt, all the dogs will be deemed as dangerous by state law and destroyed.

Best Friends Offers Assistance
Ledy VanKavage, Best Friends Senior Legal Analyst, has been in touch with North Carolina County Attorney Tony Triplet and Animal Control Director, Junior Simmons, to offer help and discuss alternatives to euthanasia. Best Friends is willing to send a certified applied behaviorist out to evaluate the dogs and puppies. Of those who do well, Best Friends will fund their sterilization and transportation to responsible rescue groups.

Labeling all pit bulls seized from fighting busts fails to consider that dogs, like people, are individuals. This was certainly made evident when Best Friends became responsible for 22 of the pit bulls seized from Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels. These dogs were deemed the "worse cases" and in need of sanctuary living and rehabilitation.

Vick Dogs a Model Case
The Vick dogs have proven that dogs seized from fighting rings aren't inherently dangerous and that they can become magnificent pets. The most recent issue of Sports Illustrated features the heartwarming journeys of former Vick dogs who now live in loving homes with new adoptive families.

In the true spirit of unconditional love, they are affectionate with people and many even take pleasure in the company of other dogs. The bottom line is that all pit bulls bred for traits like physical strength, determination, and a strong willingness to please are not inherently dangerous.

At the very least, the dogs and puppies seized from Wildside Kennels deserve a chance to live. You can help to give them that opportunity.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

? Please contact each of the following individuals and respectfully ask them to accept Best Friends' offer to arrange for behavior evaluations of the dogs, assistance with spay/neuter surgeries and placement of dogs that pass a stringent behavior evaluation.

Funny, I haven't read ANY evidence that Faron's dogs were ill-kept. But you have some inside knowledge? You know Ed Faron, do you? Why didn't you report him, if you "know" him and "know" he's a dogfighter. And you have the nerve to call ME a "dogman"?

You don't seem to understand what our Constitution is about.

I don't actually care if he IS proven guilty. Unlike Boudreaux and Patrick, for example, who "everyone" knew were dogfighters.. yet our system of justice found them INNOCENT. Too bad the dogs were killed because people like you think it's ok to seize dogs from people everyone "knows" are dogfighters.

The point is that he has NOT been proven guilty, and the state DOES NOT have the right to seize and destroy his property, though they seize that right as if this were a fascist nation.

Even if he IS proven guilty, the dogs are innocent. Still, MOST of them will be killed. Then Best Friends, Bad Rap and whoever can pat themselves on the back for "saving" some dogs. Dogs that DID NOT NEED SAVING.

These dogs will be killed because of the attitude of YOU, so called pit bull rescuer, that it's better for healthy well kept dogs to be seized and killed if "everyone knows" the owner is a dogfighter.

What part of this don't you get?

Shall I send you a link so you can read the Constitution?

I am fully aware and familiar with the constitution. It does not support illegal activity such as possessing steroids and illegal pain medications to give to fighting dogs so that they will not feel pain? Where does the constitution say that it is OK to aide and abet criminals that seek game dogs to buy for the purpose of matching in an illegal dog fighting blood sport / gambling event ..OH...but wait a minute....Ed wasn't serious about telling buyers that they could purchase game dogs for the purpose of fighting them. He only agreed to that because he really needed the money..he had never sold dogs for the purpose of fighting before this time. He was tricked.

Where animals are concerned, the law does not have their welfare covered and needs to be modified to do so. Animals should have protection from people who think of their animals only as property and not breathing, living beings who have a right to respect and quality life...who have a right not to suffer . I have no sympathy for people who would use animals with no compassion ...who would subject animals to suffering, disfiguring, even death all because of ego and greed. Go ahead..bump your furniture together and scar it up..who cares...your dog is ALIVE and feels pain!

I am not in agreement that the dogs be euthanized and am fighting against this. The dogs have already been victimized enough. I'd love to see them live out their lives with dignity and fulfillment of their natural and intended "pack" instincts.

You are right about it being wrong to seize these dogs only to kill them. That is something that some of us are fighting HARD to change..instead of just complaining about it. The sad part is that some of the dogs will have been so "ruined" for a companion animal life by the breeding and training of the owner, that they will not be able to be saved because they can no longer function due to lack of "pack" socialization skills since they live their lives separated from each other, mostly on heavy chains to build up their muscles or
confined in such a way that they receive little human or other dog contact and are allowed to come together only to breed or fight. Who's fault is this?

I honestly do not understand how anyone can defend a dog fighter..how people can have pride in the history of dogmen breeding and using dogs for the sole purpose of exposing them to a life of bloodsport and living on chains....a life where the females dogs are bred over and over again until they are too old or too sick to have any more puppies..all in the name of greed and pride of man. It sickens me...and I am doing something about it. I may not have all of the skills and knowledge yet to make a significant difference in the lives of these dogs...but I am going to have those skills and knowledge and contacts. I am going to be a small part of changing man's lack of compassion towards other living creatures on this earth. Obviously we can't appeal to a lot of people's conscience or ability to feel compassion for other life forms...man is so freaking arrogant!....but we can make it more dangerous and less profitable.

Nobody cares what you do with your property that has no life or feeling. Go ahead...abuse it. That's in your constitutional rights. But no one has the right to hurt living. breathing beings that feel pain, grieving, loneliness. Dogs deserve to live a life without suffering.

pittbull rescue:
That was an excellent response to Emily S. It is refreshing to read something so eloquent and to the point, with a great deal of intelligence and insight. Keep up the good work.

EmilyS , There are several dogs seized from Ed Faron' s Wildside Kennels with what appears to be fighting scars. Dog Fighting scars are consistantly easy to to spot...along with the cut ears and scars on their necks from living with heavy chains around their necks.

If you don't want your private property taken and your rights to your dogs taken away...STAY LEGAL AND RESPECTSBLE and treat your dogs like pets or working dogs...not yard dogs chained outdoors in all sorts of uncomfortable ..even miserable weather. You Pit Bull Game dog dogmen and women are the very reason why this breed is under attack to be destroyed. I love my pit bull dogs and you are a threat to their reputation and well being.

Anybody who knows Ed Faron...really knows him...KNOWS that he is guitly as sin.

NOW...can we just save the innocent victims (the dogs) and give them a chance at being just happy and playful and comfortable dogs with quality lives? I realize that some people have a different definition of what a quality life for a dog is...but my definition is that dogs should have respect and dignity and most of all compassion.. This is their world also.

Man has always been guilty of feeling superior to any life form they do not know how to communicate with....from slaves to endangered species to all life on this planet until they destroy what is good.. Selfish, greedy people are like a cancer on this earth.

oh, and by the way: if Faron is found innocent, Best Friends may find itself open to a libel suit with the headline accusing him of being a dogfighter.
Posted January 20, 2009, 12:16AM by EmilyS
A sad day in America when private property is confiscated and destroyed before any guilt is proven. And of course even IF Faron is proven guilty, the dogs are likely to be dead, though THEY are innocent.. BF may be able to save a few of them. But there was NO evidence that Faron mistreated his dogs... they weren't scarred, starving or shy like those from some other busts. People should think twice before applauding this action.

Hooray for busting that monster!! But, all for nothing if we don't help his victims. People created a life of horror for these dogs and I think people should take responsiblity to do our best to correct it. Wilkes County dosen't have to be the responsible party. They can remove those animals from their county into the hands of the people at Best Friends and others. Euthanasia is NOT necessary. The entire country has witnessed what these dogs are capable of becoming, through the Michael Vick dogs, with the help of the right people. It seems to me people have a lot more difficulites in re-learning than the dogs do. Good LUCK Best Friends. Hopes and prayers for your success with these dogs too.
