The Puppy Store and Pet Headquarters agree to change

Last Chance For Animals has notched up two important achievements in the ongoing effort to end the sale of puppy mill dogs in retail pet outlets.

Last week LCA announced that two stores in California, The Puppy Store on trendy Melrose Avenue also known as “Orange Bone,” due to it’s large dog bone shaped logo, and Pet Headquarters, a long standing Malibu pet store both agreed to change their business model after months of peaceful protests led by Last Chance with enthusiastic support from local animal lovers.

According to a report on KABC-TV in Los Angeles, Pet Headquarters has committed to dropping the sale of puppies altogether and will go to a pet supply, pet food and grooming model and The Puppy Store will break new ground by offering only shelter animals for sale.

Kim Sill, who has coordinated the protests for LCA told ABC7 reporter Miriam Hernandez that the Pet Headquarters owner should be honored because the change he is making is a big deal that he didn’t have to do. LCA is supporting and promoting both stores in acknowledgement of their commitment to a humane model.

Best Friends seconds that. It is important that animal lovers in the community support stores that make the switch to a humane model with their business and good word of mouth.

This is so wonderful.

Folks: please help us to stop a local newspaper who accepts Animals For Sale Ads from Pet Stores and backyard breeders.

Yes, we are trying to do this too in Colorado and LCA has helped us all along.

We hope to become puppy mill free in 2009 and continue to close down pet stores in Denver, Longmont and elsewhere!

Awesome!!! Hitting them in their pocketbooks works. Now we have to go after The Hunte Corp, the biggest supplier of puppy mill dogs to the retailers in America..

Yes it is great news. However, we need to do follow ups for Pet Headquarters as I hear that the owner is not sticking to his word. He may have stopped selling puppies, but now he's apparently selling "exotic cats". Sigh ....

Bravo to LCA! Two more stores in L.A. are either humane or finito and this is a victory for the animal protection movement and for the animals!

You might want to see some of the other activists from many different orgs who rallied at The PuppY Store in Los Angeles and helped the owner change his mind about selling mill dogs. Some of the fun pics of the protest are on the link below. Enjoy!

I hope this convinces others that getting tgether with your friends in front of a store that sells live animals actually works. It helps educate shoppers and it shows the owners of these pet factory fronts that we will not stand for it anymore. Get out there and rally!

2009 is the year we make pet stores go humane!

We need to also get the word out that buying pets from online and website (and classified) breeders is EVEN WORSE

The ones that sell online (and ship the dog, or arrange to meet you somewhere) are the WORST OF THE WORST

USDA licensed breeders are bad, but the ones that sell online don't even have to get USDA licensed

They are literally criminals, lying to people with faked-up websites and breaking all kinds of laws

Congrats, 2 more stores, total of 8. 2009 is going to be even better for the companion animals. People are starting to get it when you buy a dog or cat you support animal cruelty. Come on everyone get on the protest/rally wagon we have fun and meet lots of animal loving new friends and it's free. Start the new year off by giving back to the universe and helping our furry friends. Can't wait to see Barkworks bite the dust!

I applaud them but want to know why UTAH still allows pounds seiures??? BF and the community, need to take action. It's not right!

Three states in the U.S. -- Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Utah -- still legally require that publicly funded shelters and pounds provide dogs and cats to institutions for experimental or educational purposes. (I'M SHOCKED THAT UTAH IS ONE OF THESE STATES:(((()

Check out the horrifying video too that LCA did. I applaud them for their undercover investigation. But there's more work to be done.
