It appears that Indianapolis Animal Care & Control has begun on a path to success for the homeless pets of the city.
Earlier this week, the Indianapolis Animal Care & Control Advisory Board offered the public the opportunity to ask questions in a public hearing of three candidates to lead the Indianapolis Animal Care and Control Shelter. The previous director, Steve Talley, resigned in September stemming from concerns of neglect at the shelter discovered during investigations.
The Indianapolis Star reported on Thursday that a new director has been recommended by the Animal Care & Control Advisory Board to replace this vacant position. The five member board provided a unanimous recommendation for Doug Rae. Mr. Rae has recently been the Chief Operating Officer for the Philadelphia, PA City Shelter.
The final decision rests with Scott Newman, who is the city’s Public Safety Director. As reported, Mr. Newman has indicated that he expects to make a decision by Monday, December 15th.
A supporter of a “no kill” strategy, Mr. Rae has experience with the management of three other shelters. Factors in the Boards decision to recommend Mr. Rae were his experience, his accomplishments and drive, and his opposition, labeled as staunch, to the euthanasia of healthy animals.
The Indianapolis Star quoted Mr. Rae as saying during his interview “You have an opportunity to put Indianapolis on the map. It’s going to be a very rewarding job because of the number of animals we can save.”
