Dec 21, 2008: UPDATE: Adoptive home fell through. Theresa is in need of an adopter!!!

See Rocky's email below. Rocky is the rescuer here who has been Theresa's champion, along with Mel Manning, who originally brought Theresa's situation to light.

"PERMISSION TO CROSS POST!!!!!

Please don't forget Mother Theresa. She is the sweet little 27 pound lab/terrier mix that nursed not only her litter but 2 other litters with some newborn kitties thrown in also. She did all of this in a high kill shelter near New Orleans. I got dozens of emails from folks wanting her when the story broke but we thought we had an adopter for her. Sadly it just didn't work out. I emailed all the people who emailed about her but nothing has worked out. This dog who gave so much of herself now needs us. Don't let her down. Theresa is a wonderful, happy, friendly girl. She loves to play with people and other dogs. This dog has the best nature of any dog I have seen in a long time. She deserves to have a home. The perfect home for Theresa would be an inside dog (of course) with older kids and another dog that likes to play. If you know of a home like this....or if someone applies to your organization that fits the bill....please let them know about Theresa. Funds are available to fly this dog to her new home and she is already fully vetted.

She's nursed many, even a kitten.... and now.....

by Patty Meehan, BFAS Network Volunteer

Today I received the impassioned plea from a rescue friend of mine here in Louisiana, Rocky G, who has been doing rescue work here longer than most of us have even thought about it. She is dedicated and is a steam-roller, when it comes to saving dogs.

Her email, the text of which is below, is the story of a very special dog, a dog who has easily earned the Mother of the Year award, as she has not only cared for her own litter, but several more, as well. And now she needs rescuing herself.

Here is her story:

“If ever rescue has come together to save a dog....please let's do it for this one. Theresa was brought into animal control near New Orleans, LA following hurricane Gustav, along with her tiny newborn puppies. She nursed, cared for and weaned them. She was then given a second litter whose mom had been killed. She nursed, cared for and weaned the second litter. She was then given a third litter!!!! Their mom would not care for them.....she nursed, cared for and weaned them. And believe it or not somewhere in there she was given newborn kittens that had no mom.....she nursed, cared for and weaned them!!!!

All of the babies from all of the litters have long been adopted...but not this super mom. She is now scheduled for euthanasia.....come on folks....this terrific dog cannot die. She loves all people, other dogs and cats. Dogs like this don't come along often and a death in a public animal control facility is certainly not a fitting ending for this wonderful creature.

Please, in the spirit of the holiday season....open your hearts to this dog...make one more spot in your rescue and let's save her.

If you can help either contact me at chipp@bellsouth.net or Jacob (at the shelter) at jstroman@jeffparish.net or you can call him 504.349.5118 (shelter number), 504.931.9777

This dog has touched my heart and it is definitely breaking at the thought of her death. I hope she touches yours as well. I am willing to foster until transport has been arranged if you can help her. She will come with all of her shots and a spay....I will pay for everything. “

Please share this dog’s story with others, and together we can insure that this wonderful mom gets the home and the love she so deserves.

I'm so happy that this very deserving dog has found a forever home, and that she will be home for the holidays.

You are a great mother Theresa, and now you will have a family to forever call you own. I am so happy for you!

I know your sweetness will bring much love into the home of your new family.

HELP IS NEEDED ONCE AGAIN! Just received this from Rocky:
"The adoption on this girl fell through as the adopters could not find the time to go to the airport to pick her up before Christmas. There is no way in hell I will let this dog stay in the shelter until Christmas. She needs out ASAP!!! Although I got tons of emails from people wanting to adopt thisspecial girl...there is no time to process applications, etc. SHE NEEDS TO
GO TO A RESCUE!!!!

I will pull early next week and can hold for a few days until transport or flight can be arranged. I already have $150 committed to pay for a flight for her. She was spayed this week and is ready to go....just needs a place to go.

LET'S NOT LET THIS DOG FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS!!!! We have to come through for her.
