Rocky, a Pit Bull Terrier, was abandoned by his owners when they moved from their apartment, leaving their dog to fend for himself.
After receiving a frantic call from her daughter about a dog jumping from an upstairs window, Pat went to the rescue. One-and-a-half year old Rocky, who was tired of his situation, took matters into his own paws and leaped to freedom. While Rocky only suffered a minor cut to his paw; he certainly surprised his neighbors and the landlord. The landlord knew nothing of Rocky’s existence and was not impressed; especially since the property was a “No Pet” rental.
Many pets like Rocky are abandoned when people compulsively adopt animals without first checking the policies set forth by their landlord. With today’s faltering economy many dogs and cats are abandoned due to housing foreclosures. Fortunately, Rocky was one of the lucky ones. In leaping from the window he leaped into Pat’s heart. Though belonging to a “bully” breed, this fine gentleman has proven himself to be a gentle “Lamb.”
Sadly, Rocky’s owners did not return to claim their dog. However, for Rocky and Pat an unbelievable bond between a human forever mom and a wonderful companion has begun.
While Rocky’s story had a fairytale ending, that is not the fate of many dogs and cats. During a time when the economy is uncertain and many people are losing their homes, family pets are paying the ultimate price. Groups like Pet Alliance are assisting people who want to keep their pets. Additionally, they help rescue those who have been left behind.
What You Can Do:
Never compulsively adopt a pet without knowing the pet policy for the rental community where you reside.
If you are a pet owner and are forced to move, consider a temporary foster home for your pet before deciding to relinquish the animal to a shelter. This could allow you to be reunited with your pet when your living situation allows.
