Several thousand shelters and rescue organizations across the country are taking part in the 10th Annual Iams Home 4 the Holidays, with an ambitious goal of finding loving, lifelong home for 1 million orphaned animals by January 5, 2009.

“We began Iams Home 4 the Holidays in 1999 with 14 San Diego area animal shelters working together to find homes for orphaned pets during the holiday season,” explains Mike Arms, the creator of Home 4 the Holidays and President of Helen Woodward Animal Center. “Little did we know that it would soon become the greatest pet adoption event in history.”

Nobody wants to think about an orphaned animal waking up behind bars on a holiday morning, adds Arms. “In the past, some shelters have discouraged families from adopting pets during the holidays, forcing them to support the puppy mill industry. Home 4 the Holidays shelters work together to match the needs of the pets with the desires of the families. Everybody wins.”

Nevada Humane Society Sets Big Goal
The goal of Nevada Humane Society in Reno is to find loving homes for 1,000 animals.

Dogs and cats at Nevada Humane Society are spayed and neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. These services would normally cost over $200.

During Home 4 the Holidays, adult dog adoptions are just $40 and adult cats are $30, both six months and older. To give a pet as a gift to someone outside immediate family, NHS offers adoption gift certificates that will allow the recipient to come into the shelter and select the perfect pet for their lifestyle.

“More families bring pets into their homes during the holidays than at any other time of year. What better gift can any of us give during the holiday season than to give a home to an orphaned animal,” says Bonney Brown, Nevada Humane Society Executive Director.
