Other Holidays in November

By Kristina deLaune, Best Friends Network Volunteer

November is obviously a big month this year, considering it marks the election of our President for the next four years. However, what about all the celebrations in November that we tend to forget about?

November is not only the month for Thanksgiving, but is also Aviation Month, Child Safety and Protection Month, Good Nutrition Month, Latin American Month, National Adoption Month, National Epilepsy Month, and Peanut Butter’s Month. It’s also National Pet Cancer Month and Vegan Month. Maybe this year we can all go out and celebrate the forgotten things November is made to honor. Adopt an animal, donate to a child protection organization and a pet cancer organization, eat peanut butter at least once a day, and maybe go vegan for a day or so!

The most important week of November, as I’m sure we all know about, is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week which is the 2nd-8th. The second week of November is National Children’s Book Week, the third is American Education Week, and the 8th-14th is Pursuit of Happiness Week. So leave a gift basket at your local animal shelter, purchase a children’s book and give it to your favorite youngster, learn something new, and do the one thing that makes you the happiest - cuddle up with your pets with popcorn and a movie!

November also has a few special days that look like a whole lot of fun! The 7th is “Hug a Bear Day,” the 14th is “National Clean Out Your Fridge Day” (I’m sure we all need to do that!), the 17th marks “Take a Hike Day” (go out in the wilderness or kick that dead-beat, no-good boyfriend that you have been thinking about dumping out of your house!), and the 30th is “Stay at Home Because You’re Well Day” (now you don’t have to feel guilty, you have a perfectly legitimate excuse)!

How You Can Help:

• Show your appreciation for animal shelters and help to save a life by chosing to adopt. Check out Petfinder.com to find one close to you.
• If you are not in the position to adopt, as stated above, show your thanks with a gift basket for the employees; however, don’t forget the four-legged residents and please also donate some pet food, treats, or toys as well.
