New Friends Become Best Friends at LA Super Adoption

The weekend was a success, but the housing crisis still looms large.

The Best Friends Adoption Festival was a great day for L.A. Animals with more than 230 dogs, cats bunnies and birds finding new homes. Actors Lisa Edelstein of “House” and Frances Conroy, currently appearing on “Desperate Housewives”, joined trainer and author Tamar Geller on stage to showcase city and county shelter dogs for adoption.

Along with all the wonderful stories of happy endings and second chances come the inevitable disappointments and animals that need follow up work and networking. This weekend’s event featured several pairs of dogs that had entered the shelter together due to the pressures of the economy, domestic issues and neglect. Nothing new there, but the number of dogs who’s paperwork read “Owner surrender, had to move,” exceeded anything we have seen in the past. To you and to me that seems to be an inexplicable rational, but with foreclosures soaring and people facing hard times, the animals are the inevitable victims.

Two such pairs of really sweet, older dogs that still need placement are Jolly (left) and Tarzan, pictured below who landed in the shelter as the result of a divorce. They are big, handsome and very friendly with people and other dogs. They are also really attached to each other, so a home together would be really cool. Jolly is a long legged and may even have some greyhound in him, Tarzan is a Lab / Shepherd mix and very, very mellow.

The other pair is a 12 year old mother and 10 year old daughter named Holly (below left) and Jessica, who were seized as evidence in a cruelty case after being found tethered and emaciated in a backyard. They love each other very much and are great with people and other dogs. Looks and personality wise, they are classic lab mixes and very, very sweet.

“These two pairs of dogs,” said Francis Battista, helped to organize the event, “highlight the fact that virtually every animal in the shelter is a true victim of circumstance and are not there for any behavior issue or other problem. They are really great dogs and I am confident that there is a place for them but time is of the essence.”
