WYES and the LA/SPCA will partner together for the first time for DOGGIE DAY C.A.R.E. (Come And Read Event) on Saturday, October 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the LA/SPCA shelter located at 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd. in New Orleans on the West Bank.

WYES’ new series MARTHA SPEAKS has ignited this special event! MARTHA SPEAKS airs weekdays on WYES-TV/Channel 12 at 7:30 a.m. and noon. This series is based on the best-selling children’s book series by Susan Meddaugh. The animated TV series follows the adventures of Martha, a loveable dog whose appetite for alphabet soup gives her the ability to speak! The educational goal of this series is to bolster the vocabulary of 4 to 7-year-olds within the context of great stories in engaging, comical ways.

During DOGGIE DAY C.A.R.E. kids and their parents can expect to meet Martha herself (so, bring your camera), watch a screening of the MARTHA SPEAKS series, join in for a special reading of Martha Speaks, take a break in the “cool off” station with refreshments and participate in a variety of other activities provided by PBS KIDS and the LA/SPCA. Also, there will be a limited number of take home “grab bags” filled with MARTHA SPEAKS and LA/SPCA goodies.

The LA/SPCA will pair dogs and kids together, so that kids can read to adoptable dogs. Animals tend to be ideal reading companions. They are attentive listeners and do not judge and criticize. On the day of the event, the LA/SPCA will go about “business as usual.” Those interested in touring the shelter are welcome, and if you are interested in adopting an animal; assistance will be provided.

This event is FREE to the public, but WYES and the LA/SPCA ask that each child bring an old towel or blanket to donate to the shelter after use at the event.

Date: Saturday, October 4
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Place: LA/SPCA
1700 Mardi Gras Blvd.
New Orleans, Louisiana
Cost: Free, but please bring a towel or blanket to donate to the shelter

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1. Meet Martha, as well as some of the shelter’s adoptable dogs, at the Saturday, October 4th event. Not only will it encourage reading among youngsters, but it also reinforces kindness to animals. It’s sure to be a fun time for both kids and adults.

2. Even if you are unable to attend, you can still help the Louisiana SPCA by donating items on their wish list, volunteering, or adopting one of their many wonderful companion animals.

Oh how exciting! I have the book Martha Blah Blah - and LOVE it! I've actually read it to some of the cats here at Best Friends when I needed a short something to read! Wish I lived closer!
