When Sadie entered the rescue from a puppy mill, the veterinarian made a shocking discovery. She'd given birth via a C-section and then been clumsily sewn back together with fish net. Thanks to Peke N Chin Midwest, Sadie now thrives in her forever home with Peaches and Mary and Katie Miller.

Puppy Mill Awareness Day - September 20, 2008

Oprah Winfrey’s expose on puppy mills earlier this year brought the brutal terrifying conditions of puppy mills to life for millions of viewers. Since her broadcast, hundreds of dogs have been seized from puppy mills and the mills shut down. Sadly, Minnesota is gaining a national reputation for large, poorly regulated puppy mills with one of the largest facilities housing over 1,000 animals.

At Peke N Chin Midwest, the dogs in our foster care program are daily reminders of what happens to dogs in commercial breeding facilities. The unnatural and oftentimes inhumane living conditions deprive dogs of adequate physical care and the opportunity to be the social pack animals that they are by nature. When these dogs outlive their usefulness to the breeders, the future is often dismal. Organizations like ours provide a workable alternative for small breed dogs that do not fare well in shelters.

On September 20, Peke N Chin Midwest is joining the Best Friends Animal Society, ROAR (Reach Out for Animal Rights) and other rescue groups and organizations throughout the United States in Puppy Mill Awareness Day. We are a small group made up of volunteers located throughout the Midwest, dedicated to, but not exclusive to, the Pekingese and Japanese Chin breeds. We provide the attention, in-home foster care, and medical treatment needed to secure loving forever homes for these dogs.
