Rap singer Earl Simmons, otherwise knows as DMX, was arrested Friday at his Cave Creek home on suspicion of misdemeanor animal cruelty and felony drug possession, after a seven-month investigation. Last August, a dozen malnourished dogs were seized from the rapper's home in a raid which also uncovered dogs buried in the backyard.
Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies also confiscated marijuana and drug paraphernalia on the premises. During the arrest., DMX barricaded himself in his bedroom for some time, finally emerging to be booked into Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix. He is scheduled to appear in court May 13.
Deputies took five pit bull puppies from the house; they will be looked after by inmates at the County Jail. Through the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office MASH Unit (MCSO Animal Safe Hospice), female inmates are given the opporutnity to heal themselves by giving care and shelter to abused animals from the community. The animals that are seized are held as evidence and eventually either adopted to good homes or if the courts determine, returned to the owner.

Write to Maricopa County Attorney Andrew P. Thomas and ask that—if convicted and in addition to spending the maximum time allowed in prison—Simmons be prohibited from owning or harboring animals for as long as possible.
