2007 Spay/Neuter Numbers Also Up 54 Percent Over 2006

PRESS RELEASE, NEW YORK, April 21, 2008

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that, as part of its ASPCA Mission: Orange program, the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) has experienced a 57 percent increase in adoptions and a 54 percent increase in targeted spay/neuter in 2007, compared to the same period in 2006.

“Animals in shelters are obviously most at-risk when it comes to companion animals,” said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “With their significant swells in both adoptions and targeted spay/neuter numbers over the last year, HSSM is clearly doing their part to give these animals the second chance they so genuinely deserve.”
“We at HSSM are extremely proud of our accomplishments over the last year,” said Tara High, executive director. “Among our main goals are to increase successful adoptions and to help control pet overpopulation in and around south Mississippi. These positive numbers have given us renewed inspiration to continue in our mission.”

Last year, the ASPCA, in partnership with HSSM, launched “ASPCA Mission: Orange™” in Gulfport/Biloxi—a collaborative effort to create a “humane community” by curbing the needless euthanasia of adoptable pets. ASPCA Mission: Orange, which is taking place nationwide in partnership with select “target” communities—including Gulfport/Biloxi—addresses those animals most at-risk (i.e. shelter animals) by including and collaborating with leading community agencies and organizations to implement a save rate at or above 75 percent for unwanted pets entering shelters.

The ASPCA has made a three-year commitment to Gulfport, as well as to each of its four other “target” communities (Austin, Texas; Spokane; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Tampa, Fla.) and is investing up to $200,000 per year in each community toward capacity-building and animal welfare efforts.
