Starting November 5, the Sarah Lucito Memorial Animal Adoption Center in Kansas City, Missouri will be open on Mondays. Manager of Animal Health and Public Safety, Lesly Forsberg, says “We felt like it would be more user friendly to the public.” The extra day should facilitate more adoptions and will allow residents to retrieve their pets picked up over the weekend quicker.
The shelter takes in approximately 10,000 animals per year. Those are mainly dogs and cats; however, they receive the occasional bird or small mammal and even had a pot-bellied pig this past week.
Extended hours are not the only good news for Kansas City animals. Just last November, the shelter constructed an additional small adoption area to their facility, which has allowed more animals the chance to find homes. As a result, their adoption rate skyrocketed and 1,600 animals have already found homes this year, in comparison with 1,200 for all of last year. Forsberg comments, “There has been a big boost in morale due to increased adoptions.”
So if you find yourself feeling lonely on a Monday in Kansas City, head on over to the shelter and perhaps you can find a forever friend.

• The KC Pet Program was formed in 2006 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to help the shelter animals. Since the facility is municipal, any donations to the shelter are deposited into a general fund. Contributions to the KC Pet Program are tax deductible and are specifically earmarked to purchase items for the animals.
• Donations of items such as toys, blankets, crates, leashes and collars are always needed.

Baby is one of the many animals available for adoption from the Sarah Lucito Memorial Animal Adoption Center. He is about two years old and is playful and sweet. Baby was picked up for running loose twice this month, but his guardian only decided to reclaim him once. Now he just needs someone to love.
