My mother told me she had seen her roaming along the rooftops near our house. Each day that passed, she looked worse, and skinnier. I suppose that it was out of desperation from hunger that caused her to jump down onto our patio, in hopes of reaching some of the leftover food that remained in our mastiff’s bowl.

The poor thing must have been terribly frightened when, before being able to take her first bite of whatever, our mastiff came out of his doghouse ready to turn her into minced meat. She went for the first open door that she saw as she frantically fled to avoid being eaten by my Tritu. She ran until she came to a wall that stopped her from running any farther, and she hid among some of the old things in the storage room.

We knew there was a cat in there because we had seen her go in, but we knew nothing else about her until three months later. The milk and food that we left near the hiding place was devoured, and there were never any leftovers. But we never saw even a glimpse of the cat. I suppose she came out at night to eat.

Also, since the very beginning she was clean. She used a litter box that we had prepared for her necessities. She never touched anything in the storage room, never broke anything, and it almost seemed as if there were no cat in there and, in fact, we sometimes had doubts that there was. But seeing the food bowl being emptied religiously, we were reassured that she was there.

By the time autumn had arrived she had begun to be a bit more trusting. From her hiding place where she stayed, she was able to see me every day as I put down new food and cleaned her litter box. Little by little she began to come out. I was very careful not to approach her, not to look directly at her so as not to scare her, and we could say that I literally ignored her. I made as is she were not even there.

We had reached a new level of trust, and she would stay visible as I put her food down, until one day I managed to pet her. It was just a very short moment of contact, but a very intense moment for me after so many months, and it filled me with hope. I had succeeded at domesticating that little unknown one who had come into our house.

I paid no attention to the first few scratches. Who could take so much! The fact is, she is the one who surrendered. With time she became less defensive and she began to let me pet her without any reservations. Now she is the one who looks for me, who comes when I call her, and she lets me brush her and clean her ears. She spends her days on the patio basking in the sun, and has never scratched me again.

Three years have passed, and she is now another member of the family. I often wonder where she came from, and what her life was like before she came to live with us. I hope this little green eyed girl has forgotten any bad memories, and that she’ll be with us for a long time to come. Therefore, if an animal in need should come into your life, don’t shut the door on him. Help him. You’ll have a made a friend forever.

Poco a poco empezó a salir.

Ayudadle. Habréis ganado un amigo para siempre.
