Reward offered for information leading to arrest of animal abuser

On August 14th, Kansas City Animal Control spotted a loose dog limping down the street which is not an uncommon occurrence in a major American city, but this dog was limping because she had lost a leg.

When Animal Control got her back to the shelter, they realized that she needed medical attention because the missing leg was a recent injury.

“The vet said he had never seen anything like it,” explained Michelle Dormady, president of the group Spay and Neuter Kansas City. “They looked for other trauma on her body, but didn’t find any. Since it was a clean break, we do feel like it was intentional.”

Animal Control and the veterinarians believe the dog, now named Misty, was likely on the street for a week with the wound. It is amazing to believe she could even survive. The theory is that the swelling and Misty taking care of her own wound prevented her from bleeding to death.

Now the investigation is underway and, although today police don’t have any leads, it is hoped that the offer of a reward will help change that. “Thanks to donations we are able to offer a $3,000 reward,” explains Dormady. Police hope that the incentive will provide a break in the case.

Since Misty has been in veterinary care, doctors felt that they needed to amputate her leg further up. That has been done and now they feel Misty is well on the road to recovery.

Misty’s story has touched people across the country, especially since the story was picked up by international news network CNN! Dormady reports that they have received some 200 adoption applications from people hoping to give Misty a new life.

While it is clear that Misty will find that loving forever home, many animals in Kansas City and across the country have similar heartbreaking stories but do not find the homes they need. Spay and Neuter Kansas City says they have raised all the money they need for the care of Misty, but there are scores of other dogs who need attention and funds.
