Selling Bunnies is Selling Out - PetSmart Petition Update

By Kate

We asked and you answered. Best Friends Network would like to send a special thank you to everyone who has signed our Selling Bunnies is Selling Out petition. With your support we have almost reached our goal of 30,000 signatures, telling PetSmart to do the right thing and only allow adoptions of homeless rabbits in PetSmart stores.

Your support of this campaign has helped communicate the importance of this issue to PetSmart. As a result, the original 40 store test has been reduced to 25 stores. Although we haven't reached our final goal, you have brought us one step closer to eliminating the retail sales of the third most euthanized pet.

Please continue to support this campaign. You are making a difference. We are almost at our goal and we ask you to email this page (using the link at upper right) to three friends and family members and urge them to sign the petition.

We also invite you to become a network member (if you aren't one already) - it's easy and free! Through this grassroots Network, we will keep you abreast of the latest news on this issue as we take the necessary steps to end the cruelty of animals everywhere.

Thank you for your support,
The Best Friends Network Team

Did you know that Petco sells bunnies, birds, and ferrets as well?

Another thought is to own PetsMart stock.

As a stockholder, you have an additional way to make your opinion known to those who run the company.

So many people seem to think bunnies are a temporary pet and little more than a holiday decoration. They need to be treated like a member of the family and a thought out decision! This is a good start, at very least.

I cut and pasted the text from the petition and sent it to PetSmart headquarters and to my local PetSmart. I also got friends and families to print out the letters and send them. If they are inundated with snail mail, it may help.

Everyone needs to tell Petsmart that they are taking their petcare dollars elsewhere and then do it (but not to Petco because they also sell rabbits). Large companies like Petsmart will only listen when it affects their bottom line. When they see their profits dropping and they've been told it's because of their rabbit selling then they'll HAVE to reconsider. We have to make them realize we're serious.

The sad part about Petsmart's headquarters being local is that they know how many rabbit rescues there are in AZ and how many even the rescue organizations must euthanize because they just don't have room!

Also, as an FYI-the $100 bunnies that include being neutered/spayed, are much cheaper to adopt through most rescue organizations that do that anyway and are NON-PROFIT!

I work at Petsmart and I'm glad we don't sell rabbits.

This is also starting to get some local press here in Phoenix, AZ where Petsmart Headquarters is. A recent newspaper article and news report. Here is a link if you are interested:

I fully support this wonderful cause, and I am so happy to know that there are so many others out there like me. The power of one voice may not be that great, but when all animal lovers work together the welfare of these bunnies(and all other animals), will be much better protected.

As a mommy to two bunnies I think it is sad the number of bunnies that are destroyed. People by the little bunnies becuase they are so cute and their kids want one. But as soon as they are full grown the bunnies are ignored and not cared for. Please do not buy a bunny or any pet for that matter until you realize the commitment that is takes. Animals are living creatures and should be treated will love, care and repect.

i work at petsmart. and trust me, a lot of consideration has gone into the sale of rabbits. we still promote their adoption (as we will carry small numbers of rabbits) and we will stop their sales around easter so that no one buys a bunny just because of the holiday. petsmart does a lot for the animals in our stores. the fact is, people want to buy rabbits. just like they buy ferrets... so why aren't you harping on petsupermarket? not to mention the fact that they leave sick, injured, and dying animals on the sales floor and DO NOT use vets on in store animals.
...just a thought.

This campaign should also focus on other chain stores like Petco, Petland and Pets Plus that sell rabbits.
