Like many bulls throughout India, Nundy roamed the streets, foraging and relying on the goodwill of humans for food and care.

Nundy’s turf was Chitpore, a neighborhood in the North of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta).

One day, Nundy’s confidence in the beneficence of humans prompted him to approach a roadside eatery in search of food. Deemed a nuisance, a pot of boiling hot starch (leftover from cooking rice) was thrown on him.

Nundy was brought to ASHARI (Animal Shelter Hospital and Research Institute), run by People for Animals Calcutta (PfA), the sister organization to Compassionate Crusaders Trust. It was there that he was given the name Nundy, after the bull ridden by Lord Shiva.

ASHARI’s expert veterinarians took care of him, treating the horrific burn on his left shoulder. After 15 months of treatment, Nundy recovered and was brought back to his neighborhood by a group of compassionate citizens. During his stay, Nundy was visited and petted by many people, including Maneka Gandhi, the head of People for Animals, and Phil Woolen of the Winsome Constance Kindness Trust in Australia.
