The MJ Higgins Gallery in downtown Los Angeles was packed on Saturday night when droves of animal-lovers and art-lovers came out to support the opening of an art show to benefit Best Friends Animal Society.
Artwork by Cyrus Mejia, Frank Bruynbroek, Nicole Bruckman, Alex in Welderland, Margaret Von Biesen, Suzi Moon and John Fleenor was on display. All artists incorporate animals into their work which includes either photography or painting. Three pieces were sold during the event with part of the proceeds going to Best Friends Animal Society.
Approximately 400 people attended the opening which included hor d'oeurves, sweets and wine. Many continued the celebration into the wee hours of the morning after moving downstairs into the charming "speak easy" in the basement of the gallery. This area downstairs includes several finely appointed, cave-like rooms which allows guests to experience the feeling of a unlawful party during prohibition days.
The gallery is located at 224 S. Main Street. The show will continue to run through February 10th with the following times:
Tues-Thurs 11-6 pm, Fri-Sat 12-6 pm.
The downtown "Art Walk" will take place on the second Thursday of the show (February 8th) so the gallery will have extended hours: 11-9 pm.
