Compassionate bidding effort spares 200 animals from exploitation, slaughter, and “canned hunts”

Press Release From: Advocates for Game Farm Animals with the Coalition for Catskill Game Farm Animals

NEW YORK, October 25 -- A coalition of animal advocates released on Wednesday a list of more than 200 animals that were spared from exploitation, slaughter, or so-called “canned hunts” as a result of purchases at the Catskills Game Farm auction on October 18.

The Catskill Game Farm auction pitted animal advocates who joined together in a coordinated bidding effort against individuals and organizations with known connections to so-called “canned hunt” operations.

“Canned hunts” are instances where exotic, endangered, or threatened species are released in a restricted area for the purpose of slaughter by trophy hunters.

Among the animals saved were two white rhinos, four vervet monkeys, several aoudads, nilgai, a European boar, a warthog, pygmy donkeys, llamas, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, ducks and pigeons. The animals are being transported to sanctuaries under agreements reached by the coalition of advocates prior to the auction.

“We were very encouraged to see the tremendous show of support from donors that made these purchases possible,” said Barbara Cozzens, spokesperson for the Coalition for Catskill Game Farm Animals. “But we still regard the overall outcome as a tragedy. With more time and more funds, we could have saved so many more.”

The cooperative bidding effort included Advocates for Game Farm Animals (AGFA), the Coalition for Catskill Game Farm Animals (CCGFA), and Wildlife Watch. Organizations such as Tusk and Bristle, Foster Parrots, and individual bidders such as Mark Ecko of Ecko Unlimited and Animal Nation also cooperated with animal-friendly advocates during the auction.

Some 200 bidding efforts by animal friendly individuals or organizations succeeded. For example, operators of the Tusk and Bristle, a well-run pig sanctuary, outbid an individual believed to represent trophy-animal interests to preserve the life of a warthog.

At the final auction price of $9,000, the warthog, named Louise, was the most expensive individual animal sold at the auction. In a similar bidding contest, a parrot rescue group outbid a taxidermist to save the lives of two African porcupines.

Nonetheless, many auction animals went to individuals who, according to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), have ties to canned hunt operations. Animals lost to these traders include many fallow deer, dall sheep, a red stag, nilgai and yaks.

The auction also provided a close-up look at the extent of decline in the level of care at the Catskill Game Farms facilities and raised concerns about animal care conditions there, according to the coalition.

“Unfortunately, too many of the animals auctioned are now headed toward danger,” said James Van Alstine of Advocates for Game Farm Animals. “And it was clear to eyewitnesses that several of the animals had suffered for a long time before the Catskill Game Farm decided to proceed with the auction.”

In a separate action, HSUS has alleged that standards of humane treatment for some of the animals were violated. Advocates for Game Farm Animals is encouraging the U.S. Department of Agriculture and New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate the legality of all the auction sales as well as the health and welfare conditions of animals at Catskill Game Farm. Should any of the auction results be nullified, the Coalition is fully prepared to purchase these animals for placement.

AGFA remains concerned about the intended fates of many Catskill Game Farm animals that were not auctioned, including several big cats, zebras, Przewalski's horses and camels.

I have been looking for solutions on how to lose weight after baby; I got so many weight loss experiences after giving birth! Therefore, I will share some of the most important tips to answer your questions.
How to lose weight after the baby - 4 simple tips
1) Breastfeeding is the most important, not only is your baby - breastfeeding help lose weight fast! Your baby, "eat" your unnecessary heat, together with the milk from you.

Prevalence of teenage belly fat in developed countries such as the United States is appalling. 1 6-year-old in the United States to have a weight problem to some extent, with the majority of these young people's personal growth is unhealthy. The best way to get rid of belly fat can happen to them, they will be overweight and low productivity of adults and the most serious could happen is that they will lose belly fat.
This situation is quite alarming. If you are juvenile weight problems, you have to put it head-on now, because your body settles mature, more and more difficult to get rid of belly fat.
Many have written about how to lose belly fat which is unusual; we can see that different sources give different views. But the fact of belly fat diet is that young people lose abdominal fat is not all the difficulties, because their body is still healthy and growing. I am very happy for those animals who were saved, but immensly sad for the innocent souls who are now in less-than-humane hands.

Kathy Schulz should be ashamed of herself for allowing this bidding "competition" to even take place. But all I can say to the greedy Ms. Schulz is KARMA. I pity your future, but you deserve whatever comes your way.

Follow the link in Best Friends' current article to read about the story that preceded the auction. There you will find an active Donate button. The Coalition is still raising funds for the animals whose lives have been spared, for transportation, lifetime sanctuary, and veterinary expenses. Donations will also help the Coalition address the bigger picture "the fate of all animals held in similar situations". The looming threat of "canned hunts" for those who have and will be bought by unscrupulous animal traders and breeders if we don’t all get involved. This horror for the animals and those who love them can end with your help! Donate if you can. Spread the word about the plight of animals held in unsuitable captivity. There was little time to raise funds for the animals who were won with donations for the bidding on October 18; help the Coalition bank funds to prevent future loss of animal life by contributing now if you can.

First and foremost... just want to thank everyone for their support. And many, many thanks to Best Friends for offering to house some of our new friends. Sadly, it was not needed as we won far fewer animals than expected (yet spent much more money doing it).

According to HSUS, the following animals are known to have been purchased by two individuals with established connections to the canned hunt industry:
5 Antlered fallow deer
5 male fallow deer
3 yak
20 fallow deer (assorted sex)
Red Deer Buck
Antlerless fallow deer (unknown number) sold as a lot
Hog deer male
Adult male Nilgai
3 young male nilgai
Bid along with buyer 133 which may be Wayne Shambo
Axis deer (large male)
7 axis deer
Large male Blackbuck

Light a candle for them....

All the best,
Barbara
