Vegas Pet Food Collection

June 30, 2009, 3:21PM MT

Donate pet food to help struggling families keep their pets.

This summer Best Friends Team No More Homeless Pets volunteers will be working in Las Vegas to collect pet food for families in need in the First Home Forever Home Four Legged Food drive.

In the past year more pets have been finding themselves homeless because their families are facing tough economic times. To help Las Vegas people and their pets, Best Friends volunteers will be collecting pet at two Smith’s Food and Drug locations:

July 11
8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Smith’s Food and Drug
7130 N. Durango Drive

August 15
8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Smith’s Food and Drug
1000 N. Green Valley Parkway

How You Can Help

Please take a donation of unopened, unexpired dry or canned pet food to the Smith’s collection sites on July 11 at the North Las Vegas location or on Aug. 15 at the Henderson location listed above.

Consider organizing a mini pet food drive within your business, group, club, church, or neighborhood and bring those donations to one of our event locations.

Download, print and post this flyer in your place of business, or other places your frequent (with permission, of course).

Who will receive the food that is collected?

Donations will be given to Three Square Food Bank. Three Square distributes food through their partner agencies into the hands of individuals and families in need. A national model project, Three Square is a community collaborative partnership with the gaming industry, businesses, non-profit agencies, food distributors, UNLV, the CCSD, governmental entities, the media and hundreds of volunteers to efficiently and effectively serve hope to the hungry.

Goals of the Four-Legged Food Drive

• To support food pantry work and current needs for pet food in local communities by collecting pet food that will help people keep their pets in these difficult economic times
• To increase awareness about homeless animals and the goal of reaching a day when there are No More Homeless Pets

Why Do a Four Legged Food Drive?

With or without the downturn in the economy, every community has a homeless pet problem. In the past year, however, the number of pets who become homeless via relinquishment and abandonment has increased because of current economic conditions, foreclosures and joblessness.

In response, an increasing number of organizations provide pet food to people who need it. Best Friends is responding to that need because helping provide free pet food will help some people keep their pets.

Through generous donations to Best Friends, the First Home Forever Home campaign, part of the Best Friends mission to achieve a day when there are No More Homeless Pets, has already donated truckloads of dog food in Atlanta and Las Vegas.

First Home Forever Home

The Best Friends First Home Forever Home campaign focuses on all aspects of helping people make and honor a lifetime commitment to their pets. Millions of companion animals die every year in crowded shelters because their families decided to let them go for some reason. Through education, intervention and action, First Home Forever Home provides guidance and resources to help people care for their pets and keep them as loved members of their families.
