SCOTTISH SHARKS UNDER THREAT

June 24, 2009, 9:2PM MT

Tagging to track and preserve

By Jill Mullen. Best friends Network Volunteer.

On June 12th BBC correspondent Lorna Gordon joined sea anglers in the Luce Bay off the coast of Scotland in search of SHARKS!

But the mission for the day was to catch, tag and release sharks to help gather vital information on shark numbers and behaviour.

There used to be 18 or more shark species in British waters, but these numbers are rapidly declining. Luce Bay is a ‘hotspot’ for TOPE, an inland shark that grows up to 2 metres in length, but the species, like many, is under threat and on the brink of becoming endangered.

Organised by the Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network this is another step in the ongoing process of preserving marine life and understanding how the species migrate and frequently end up as an accidental catch by trawlers.

Trying to understand in order to protect and preserve.
