Salt Lake City unites to rescue abandoned poodles
More than 75 poodles were discovered in the home of Salt Lake City-area breeder Lloyd Weaver, 64, who died in a local hospital last week. The dogs were without food and water for five days and living in one room. Three dogs were found dead and several more were euthanized because of health conditions.
The Utah Animal Adoption Center was called in to help with the rescue of the dogs. According to reports, the agency was able to take in about 30.
The Center will take in a number of the remaining dogs that still need homes as soon as space becomes available in the shelter.
Kim Farley, Roosevelt City Animal Shelter director, says that the public has responded wonderfully and people were lining up to fill out adoption applications. She even received calls as far away as San Francisco with offers of taking the dogs. All of the dogs have been groomed, spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.
Says Farley, “The support has been so tremendous, it shows how much people really care.”
When the dogs were rescued they had nails growing into their pads, were surrounded by feces and urine and matted coats. Some had even endured darkness for their whole lives. And yet they emerged as lovely, loving companion animals ready to start anew!
