New Nonprofit Helps Foreclosed Upon Pets

“Saving lives one paw at a time.”

Las Vegas is number one in the country in foreclosures. Approximately 14,000 homes went into foreclosure in April. UNLV reports there are currently 30,000 vacant homes in Las Vegas. Unfortunately many of the people who had to give up those homes also gave up their pets. Local rescue groups are full. Many can’t take in any more. Lied, the city shelter, takes in an average of 150-200 animals every day. Other animals are left to starve in empty homes and backyards.

Foreclosed Upon Pet Inc., FUPI, was founded in October of 2008 by two local animal lovers to help these abandoned animals. FUPI’s mission is to rescue pets that have found themselves homeless due to their owner’s economic hardship or death as well as to provide temporary housing for pets whose owners have been hospitalized or militarily deployed. They’re off to a good start. They have recently begun to hold adoption events and they are on their way to their year-end goal of 20 adoptions per week.

FUPI is helping animals like Max, pictured above, who showed up on someone’s doorstep extremely thin and dirty; Ce-Ce, pictured left, a stunning Seal Point Siamese whose owner was evicted; and Dale, pictured below, a Shiba Inu whose owner was laid off and subsequently lost his home. All are currently available for adoption.

FUPI is being proactive in trying to get to owners before they are evicted so the pets can be placed in new homes rather than being abandoned. To this end FUPI is trying to spread the word about themselves and their pets available for adoption through their “cyber sanctuary”, an online e-mail network.

So many people and pets in Las Vegas are losing their homes. If you know of anyone whose pets are in danger of being abandoned, please refer them to FUPI.
