Not too long ago, Chicago police busted up a puppy mill operation. No big surprise really; many puppy mills operate in rural and remote regions throughout the Midwest.
But this puppy mill was doing brisk business in one of Chicago’s most densely populated urban neighborhoods. Unusual? Sadly, no. It’s a myth that puppy mills operate only in secluded and sparsely populated areas.
This week, Best Friends sponsored Safe Humane Chicago will highlight and discuss the many myths surrounding puppy mill trade on its weekly local cable access show this Thursday.
Safe Humane Chicago Principal Director will host Melia Carter, Safe Humane Chicago’s Director of Public Affairs. Carter will be accompanied by special guest Harlow, one of her companion animals and former puppy mill victim. Harlow had been used as a breeder and held hostage in a cramped bird cage with other dogs for more than five years. As a result, he can’t and never will be able to walk.

“People need to understand that when you buy puppies from pet stores or breeders that advertise on the Internet, you are insuring that more dogs like Harlow will suffer at the hands of an industry that only cares about making a quick buck,” says Carter. “We must stop allowing these dogs to be victimized and work to shut down every puppy mill that exists. What Harlow went through is a travesty. No animal should have to suffer in this manner.”
Bathurst and Carter will also talk about the emotional and physical trauma affecting puppy mill victims, medical issues and how people can join the fight to close puppy mills.
The show airs Thursday at 5:30 p.m Central time on CAN-TV Hotline 21. For channels in your local area, check listings in your local TV Guide.
