Friendicoes --a peaceflul haven

Imagine being abandoned because you don't look like a boxer!

That's exactly what happened to Cherry as a little puppy! Fortunately, Friendicoes was there to take care of her and provide lots of love, care, healthy food, and to make sure that she found a loving home that would appreciate her for being exactly who she was--whether or not she looked like a boxer!

Friendicoes, in Delhi, India is a wonderful sanctuary that cares for hundreds of dogs, as well as around a thousand horses, donkeys, monkeys and cats. They are a refuge for animals with no place to go.

Friendicoes takes in lots of animals, like Cherrry, that have been abandoned or given up by their owners. Friendicoes' May newsletter recounts the story of another of these dogs, Willow, told by Tandrali (Coincidentally, Willow actually is a real boxer.)

"My first memory of Willow is a scrunched up face, a drooping head, a thin curved body and every rib protruding…and he is a beautiful specimen of a boxer!

"Willow was born a perfectly beautiful and healthy boxer puppy, but as he grew older his breeder owner observed that his one leg was slightly longer and crooked, which marred his chances of fetching a good price. His brothers and sisters all got sold, but poor Willow was left… [Since he couldn't be sold, his owner tended to forget to feed him.] A kind person who was visiting the breeder saw Willow and rescued him and brought him to Friendicoes. [He was really thin, and they weren't sure that he would survive]…

"That was about a fortnight ago. Now any one who sees Willow can only marvel at the miracle that a little care and good food can do. Willow now plays tug of war with the stuffed monkey which is his constant companion. He growls at it, picks it up, throws it about and then lunges towards it in attack mode, something that every healthy puppy does. He is still a quiet puppy and keeps to himself most of the time although he does like to be in company occasionally. Most of his time is spent in eating and sleeping and building up his strength…but he is now opening up and has even started responding to his name. There’s a kind lady who is already offering to give Willow a home and lots of love and care…something that all animals have a right to…but it will be another few days till Willow is ready to go to his new family. We will all miss him when he leaves us and goes to his new home but we take consolation in a job well done and one more life saved!"

Congratulations, Willow, on your new home! (We hope you get to take your stuffed monkey with you!)
