Most of you reading this know all about Safe Humane Chicago, a Best Friends-sponsored grass-roots initiative dedicated to ending violence against people and animals.

But did you know that Safe Humane Chicago has its own TV show? Every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. (Central Time), SHC hosts a half-hour program on Chicago cable access channel CAN-TV Hotline 21.

Each episode will highlight a specific Safe Humane Chicago program, initiative or upcoming event. SHC principal director Cynthia Bathurst is grateful for the opportunity to raise greater awareness of the various programs within Safe Humane Chicago, the Best Friends campaigns that benefit, and possibly recruit more partners and volunteers.

“We’ll be talking about many things in the coming weeks, says Bathurst. “There’s the issue of safety for dogs and kids. Why we should care about dog fighting and animal abuse. We’re looking to share resources to help families keep their pets; educate people on how to care for community cats.

“We’ll be exploring the financial and emotional impact of puppy mills on families who adopt the puppies. And of course, we’ll talk about Chicago dogs—the mutts, the purebreds and the popular dogs who live in our city—and, perhaps most importantly, how our audience can help spread the messages.”

This week’s show features Best Friends senior legislative analyst Ledy VanKavage, Esq. She’ll be discussing her role with Best Friends and Safe Humane Chicago with host Melia Carter, director of public affairs for Safe Humane Chicago.

VanKavage will also talk about the recent passage of Illinois H.B. 562 and S.B. 90, which, if signed into law, would call for the cross-reporting of most incidents of animal and child abuse. Best Friends worked closely with the Cook County sheriff’s office to promote the passage of the bills.

“It’s an honor to be working with Safe Humane Chicago and Best Friends to help improve the lives of pets and people,” says VanKavage. “And we were proud to work with the Cook County sheriff’s office in our efforts to make all of Illinois safe and humane for children and animals.”
