Pitbull who saves a litter of puppies is looking for a forever home

A pit bull named Cupcake has a big heart, and now she needs a family to open their hearts and give her a home.
Cupcake Adopts Abandonded Litter
Last November, just 2-1/2 weeks after giving birth to her own litter of pups, another dog at the same safehouse as Cupcake dragged her newborn puppies to the back of a garage, leaving them to die. Cupcake became frantic and found a way in. She carried the puppies one at a time to her own crate, which was outfitted with a liner and blanket, and nursed the puppies back to life as if they were her own.
On top of that, Cupcake, who was rescued from an animal shelter’s death row just before giving birth, had been diagnosed with a severe case of heartworms. To nurse the newborns, she had to sit up just to catch her breath. After nursing and licking the puppies to keep them alive, Cupcake went into heart failure and had to be rushed to a veterinary hospital’s intensive care unit.
Today, the 3-year-old dog has been successfully treated and is healthy but remains on medication.
“She deserves a medal for what she did,” says Dr. Anteneh Roba, co-founder of Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation in Houston, Texas. “The least we humans can do is let others know about this special little dog that has a heart of gold.”
Now Cupcake Needs a Home
Instead of a medal, Roba says he’ll settle for a forever home for Cupcake. Roba has been assisting Princess Annie’s Clan, a small rescue group in Sugar Land, Texas, with Cupcake’s medical care. Her puppies——including her surrogate litter——have all been adopted.
Cupcake’s caregivers at Princess Annie’s describe her as a friendly, happy dog that’s wonderful with children but would prefer being an only dog.
