On April 24th a record-breaking sale by Spinks of London saw the canine equivalent of the Victoria Cross sold for £24,250.
The PDSA Dickin Medal was awarded to WWII hero Rip, a stray terrier adopted by air raid warden Mr. King, who was stationed at Poplar during the London Blitz in 1940.
He became a hero, locating people buried in rubble by the air raids, and though never trained he served as the team’s mascot as search and rescue dog throughout the war.
He became ill in 1946 and sadly, due to his age, did not survive. He was laid to rest in the PDSA Animal cemetery located in Ilford, North London.
Rip is one of only 62 animals to receive the prestigious Dickin Medal between 1943 and 2007.
