Great news! Best Friends received $1,000 as the first weekly winner in The Animal Rescue Site and Petfinder.com $100,000 Shelter+ Challenge. How did we do it? We didn’t. You did!

That’s right -- many Best Friends loyal members and supporters took time out of their busy days to go to The Animal Rescue Site, select the shelter challenge button, and cast a vote for Best Friends as the animal welfare organization most deserving of a cash award.

Last week, Best Friends received the most clicks; and then, $1,000!

More importantly, everyone who entered a shelter name helped feed homeless animals all across the country. Each time a visitor goes to The Animal Rescue Site, the site’s sponsors donate .6 bowls of food to shelter animals. That makes the animals big winners, too.

The Shelter+ Challenge continues daily through July 26. People may enter once a day, every day, through the duration of the contest. Each week, The Animal Rescue Site and Petfinder.com will award a $1,000 prize to the organization receiving the most votes.

At the end of the challenge, a grand prize of $20,000, a second prize of $5,000 and third prize of $3,000 go to the three organizations receiving the most clicks overall.

Even if you don’t enter, you can make a huge difference for shelter animals by simply visiting the website. It doesn’t cost anything. And it takes very little time.

The campaign’s success speaks for itself: Over the course of one day -- April 21 to be exact -- 437,065 people clicked on the site resulting in 262,239 bowls of food for shelter animals.

So click today. And remember to vote for Best Friends in The Animal Rescue Site and Petfinder.com $100,000 Shelter+ Challenge!

Just a note...there is a couple in Veyo who took over "Angels For Animals" (now it's "Second Chance Ranch") there, and because of conditions, they literally are trying/have to (on their own) remodel the entire set up (all while adopting out animals). $20,000 would mean A LOT towards creating the improvements needed. Best Friends seriously is AWESOME, but I'm actually hoping for Angels For Animals/Second Chance Ranch on this particular contest.

If folks are looking for a small shelter that does the up-most (sp?) with every penny, vote for "Delano Police Department Animal Control". Frankie, Glenda and David are tireless volunteers who make up for the animal-unfriendly area they live in. Animals really benefit for each $1 here!

Yes PLEASE don't forget the smaller animal organizations that are just trying to stay afloat in these very trying times. They don't take in millions of dollars each year but are also saving many lives out there.
