Passover observance and our pets

Passover observance and our pets
As members of our families, it is understandable the many people wish to include their beloved companion animals in all aspects of our lives; however, this was taken to a whole new level this past week when the Wheeling-based Wigglyville hosted a Passover Seder for area pets, which included special kosher pet food provided by Evanger’s Dog and Cat Food Company.
While companion animals are not limited to a kosher diet during Passover, according to the Torah, the home is to be free of grains, which are commonly found in many varieties of pet food. And when Holly Sher, owner of Evanger’s, saw one of her neighbors resort to feeding the family’s dog in the garage to comply, she became interested in kosher pet food.
Now certified by the Chicago Rabbinical Council as permissible for homes that observe Jewish law, the food is not kosher for human consumption, as it is not manufactured with kosher meat, which would be cost prohibitive.
While the product is available all year long, sales definitely increase around the Passover holiday.
