RENO, NV—More than 200 dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and horses were temporarily at home in a Walmart parking lot in Reno on Saturday, April 4, in the hopes of finding forever homes. And more than 140 of them got their wish.
The Walmart site, 4855 S. Kietzke Lane, was transformed into an animal haven for the day as the 2nd Annual Super Pet Adoption & Festival attracted thousands of people in search of the perfect pet. Sponsored by PETCO and PETCO Foundation and hosted by Walmart, the lively event was co-organized by Nevada Humane Society and the SPCA of Northern Nevada.
“We’re thrilled that so many people opened their hearts and homes to a new pet,” said Bonney Brown, Executive Director of Nevada Humane Society.
Added Tom Jacobs, Executive Director of the SPCA of Northern Nevada, “We appreciated how our community came together to celebrate pets and their people while supporting the organizations who work so tirelessly for animal welfare.”
In addition to promoting pet adoption, the event also featured a host of animal welfare organizations, businesses offering pet products and services, and low-cost vaccinations and micro-chipping.
Celebrity emcees hosted hourly pet parades that showcased adoptable animals, and the Reno Police Department K9 Unit and area dog trainers put on demonstrations.
One of the lucky dogs was Punkie, who had been a resident of Dog Town Canine Rescue in Carson City for 1-1/2 years. “He basically grew up in our rescue and I was starting to think we’d never find him the right home,” said Lorayn Walser, the organization’s founder. “Miracles do happen—and he’s now in what we’re praying will be his ‘forever’ home!”
The Super Adoption & Pet Festival was launched in 2008 as part of Nevada Week for Animals, sponsored by Best Friends Animal Society. Nevada Humane Society and SPCA of Northern Nevada organized the event in 2009 to promote the adoption alternative as part of the mission to make Washoe County a no-kill community.
