Delaware, OH

Saturday, April 4th is National Tag Day, and HSDC is joining forces with thousands of organizations across the country to support this vital event – for both dogs and cats!

Between 11:00am and 3:00pm the Humane Society of Delaware County will be offering $15 microchipping for dogs and cats, and free pet identification tags for the first 50 people (a $10.00 value!).

“Summer results in an increase in the number of owned dogs and cats that get loose,” said Wade Beane the Humane Society Director. “Having a form of permanent identification and a visible tag are two key elements to help reunite people with lost pets.” Beane also mentioned that being able to quickly track down the owner of an injured stray animal is a crucial step to providing immediate medical care.

According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, over 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into animal shelters in the United States as strays each year. Unfortunately, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners; the main reason is owners failed to put identification on their animals. Even the most responsible pet owners can be accidentally or unexpectedly separated from their pets.

Saturday also marks the grand opening of the new Adoption Center at HSDC. “The new renovations make adopting a pet at HSDC a great experience!” said Heidi Orahood of HSDC. Home Again Microchipping will be handing out free hats and stickers, and students from Big Walnut High School and the Delaware Area Career Center will be on hand to greet and assist visitors.
