North Carolinians Urged to Attend and Support Changing Dog-fighting Laws

By Best Friends Staff

The recent mass euthanasia of 145 dogs, including about 75 puppies, prompted a candlelight vigil to honor the dogs that were destroyed after being seized from Wildside Kennels—a North Carolina dog-fighter’s breeding operation.

Organizers hope lawmakers will enact change to guarantee dogs seized from dog-fighting operations will have the opportunity to be individually evaluated, rather than being automatically deemed “dangerous” and destroyed.

Concerned citizens and representatives of animal rescue groups from across the state are planning to attend.

Vigil Location and Time
Date: Wednesday, March 4
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Bicentennial Mall
16 W. Jones St.
(near the North Carolina General Assembly)
Raleigh, NC
Google Map

Vigil Highlights
• A bell will toll 145 times in memory of each dog.
• As a bell is rung, a collar will be placed in a circle.
• Song: Wayfaring Stranger, by Shelia Carlisle, noted North Carolinian blues singer
• Meet Phantom: “Ambassador Pit Bull” and some of his friends
• Handout: “I’m a Lover Not a Fighter” postcard featuring Leo rescued from the Michael Vick Bad Newz Kennels, now a certified therapy dog.

How You Can Help:
• Please do not let something like this happen again. Residents of North Carolina, please contact your state Senator, Representatives to request a redraft of North Carolina Statute NC 67-1 - 4.1 (a)(1).

• Find your state legislators here by inputting your zip code + 4 (scroll down page, right hand column).

• Insist that the following language from North Carolina Statute NC 67-1 - 4.1 (a)(1) be removed from the definition of “Dangerous Dog.”

- “Any dog owned or harbored primarily or in part for the purpose of dog fighting, or any dog trained for dog fighting.”
- Remind your legislators that all dogs are individuals and should be evaluated as such, not lumped together by group or breed.

Kelly4cats, you are right but in not accepting the guilt we will never move on to better the problem. Having no guilt seems to only make the killing of these defenscless dogs and cats a weekly if not daily occurrence. When and only when, everyone, rescue included, comes together and starts valuing these guys for what they truly have to offer humans, then and only then will we see a shift from killing as being a quick fix to the problem. The way we continue to devalue their lives is a total hypocracy. On one hand we come to their aid and in the next are killing them. Sometimes I think that perhaps they would be better left in the situation from which they are apprehended.

I will light 4 candles here, for Angel, Blues Singer, Dutchess and Henry, and one more for all the others....we will not forget you and we will not quit until these cruelties are abolished.

I wish I could be there with you. Thank you for showing others that their lives WERE important !!! They were never given the chance to be loved, even after they removed from the horrible life that was forced upon them.

The thought of a vigil will shed light on the horrific act of humans who slaughter. The puppies didn't have a chance to even grow up to deem vicious or gentle. All in all, the vigil somehow sadly reflects on the nature of the beast. Humans who lack the knowlege of reality versus truth in actions that should not have been. The poor souls lost will be sadly remembered. I too will hurt tomorrow evening, as I hug my dog who shares with the innocent victims of this holocaust.

I certainly do wish I could be there in person but I will definitely be there in spirit.

So almost 200 innocent dogs were murdered. What happened to the people who ran this operation - did they get a slap on the wrist, will they be free to go and create another such operation? Are they receiving any kind of animal abuse counseling?

Awesome that vigils are being held. I am there in spirit with you!

Humans are the sickest species on the face of the earth. This unecessary killing goes on day after day with no end in sight, with no remorse and nothing learned. Domesticate them, have them dependent upon us and when things go wrong kill them. Even our so called legal system and yes, shelter systems have failed them severley. We all have to take some responsibility for the demise of 1000,s of animals killed daily. I will probably take some flack for this comment but it is how I feel.

The dogs are the victims here why are they getting punished. The people who take part in dog fighting are the ones who should be sentenced to the fullest extent of the law. I would say a pray for all of the beautiful souls, that were put to death because of ignorance and fear.

I will be there in spirit thinking of these dogs and all the others who suffered the same fate without individual evaluation (including my beloved Fred). I look to the summit in April with hope! We still have a long way to go but there have been so many positive steps in the last 12 months I have become increasingly hopeful.

OMG, d2or3, I just watched one of your links and I proceeded to cry uncontrollably. Thanks so much for sharing these links. It is HORRIBLE that these animals are simply put down without any consideration for their potential. Just killed. No wonder there's such high turnover in shelters. I wouldn't last a day if I had to do this. Our treatment of seized dogs must change. We're so proud of all the work we've done to rehome animals, but we just kill pits without a second thought. Between this and BSL, things have got to change.

For us who cannot be there personally PLEASE add us to the prayers and let us know how it goes. We are there in soul and spirit of all those beauties murdered for no reason !!!!!!!!

Initial reports say there were 40 people in attendance and that it was quite a moving experience.

Any bust of a fighting ring is great news. But implementing tougher dog fighting laws and sentences would be most appropriate for these cases - 4 to 10 months... like Faron got... a slap on the wrist. Vick gets out soon, they all do... light sentences such as these to nothing to deter others in this greedy bloodsport to end their hidden travesties... Punish them more and set an example that this is a serious crime. Faron might just cook up a new book in his little break to sit in prison.

This is disgraceful! Humans who do these things should be ashamed of themselves. The real issue here is humans, not the dogs. It's so sad to see that this is what's become of mankind. Who are we to decide the fate of so many of God's creatures?

I live about 15 miles from Raleigh and just learned about the vigil being held there. I wish I could've attended! But my thoughts and prayers go out to every one of the unfortunate dogs that died because of human greed and ignorance! They will be remembered and loved. Me and my 2 Pitties thank everyone out there who fights against these injustices! It will make a difference if we all stick together!

I will also be with you in spirit, Raleigh. What happened to these poor, defenseless dogs, and all animals who are the victims of the horrors of humans is inexcusable and nothing short of barbaric. Makes me ashamed to be associated with the human race.......

My prayers are that these dogs, and all the others, have not died in vain. We need to give all these animals a voice and make their short lives count. We need to keep them in our memories and work to never allow such an atrocity to ever happen again, anywhere.

My prayers go to the victims of this massacre and those in Florida and around the nation and around the world.

Godspeed precious doggers, godspeed..........

I read a while ago about a pill people could take to forget painful experiences in the past. I think it's just at the testing stage and it sounded controversial. I wonder if something like this could be used for ex-fighting dogs. It would be many years away but maybe its something that could hold hope for some dogs who don't respond well to conventional rehabilitation.

I will light my own candle tomorrow night for these souls who left us with very heavy hearts but also a fierce determination to stop the killing.

I hope people in this community will come out in droves to the vigil and let their numbers speak for them. The authorities need to see just how many people oppose their cruel, outdated and inhumane policies. Instead of these dogs being held in the loving arms of people who WANTED them they were instead put in a box and gassed. They have to know we can't allow this to continue anymore.

My heart & soul will be with you all at this sad vigil. I hope that out of this tragedy comes enlightenment and reason so that no more poor innocent animal's lives are lost to the ignorance of their human "caretakers". The rest of the country is watching how NC politicians respond. God Bless you all and God Bless those dear dogs.

I hope a vigil will be held every year in memory of these precious souls who never wanted to fight, only wanted to be loved.

Thank you Best Friends, Shelia, all that campaigned in this scandal - to make this an event where the dogs did not die in vain.
Education is our key tool - Oregon just impressed with the lift of the ban - we must speak up and keep the momentum going - please do your part, the memory of this scandal hurts and it an outrage - but it must never happen again - we can all help.
Thank you for organizing a vigil for these poor souls.

Someone used the word "profile" maybe we should start calling this profiling dogs. We need to use language the public can understand and relate to. None of us want to be racially profiled so we know how unfair it would be to profile dogs because of their breed. I really feel also BSL is a stepping stone towards even more restrictions on our animals. I can see ordinances going on in cities for any dog over ten pounds and them not being permitted in public areas because the chance of them getting away from their owner and biting someone is just too great. Hysteria will only lead to more hysteria.

safeplace;
I agree with every word but we must keep up the fight. Blaming and guilt will only hold us down. People do bad things in this world but we can overcome these injustices.

The look on the woman's face in the photo says what we are all feeling, the heartbreak and the anger. But underneath that lies a determination to put an end to the exploitation and killing of these beautiful dogs. This case has become a rallying point, a call for everyone who believes that good can win over evil, that each one of us should do something, write emails, make phone calls, donate, foster a dog, attend a protest, make sure you take part because puppy mills, dog fighting and BSL is spreading across the country. It's not enough to sit there and say it's a tragedy and it shouldn't happen. It is going to take all of us to stop it.
